Some landscapes are surprising precisely because you do not expect to find them. The Balze del Valdarno are one of them: walls, pinnacles and deep gullies in warm colours rise among hills, vineyards and the Tuscan countryside, creating one of the most distinctive natural landscapes in the Valdarno Aretino.
A place to admire, but above all to experience on foot, following trails that allow you to get closer to these formations and slowly discover the landscape surrounding them.
Balze del Valdarno: what to see
The scenery of the Balze changes continuously along the way. At times they appear in the distance between fields and rows of vines; elsewhere, the earthen walls draw closer and become the main feature of the landscape.
Among the most interesting places from which to discover them are Castelfranco di Sopra and the small hamlet of Piantravigne, offering particularly striking views of the formations and the surrounding countryside.
A visit can therefore become much more than a simple panoramic stop: a few hours spent walking, combining nature, small villages and the slower pace that characterises this part of Tuscany.
Acqua Zolfina Trail: trekking among the Balze del Valdarno
One of the best-known itineraries for exploring the Balze is the Acqua Zolfina Trail, a circular route marked as CAI Trail 51.
The route is just over 7 km long, does not present any particular hiking difficulties and crosses a variety of landscapes: countryside, vineyards, woodland and some of the most interesting viewpoints overlooking the Balze.
The trail takes its name from the Acqua Zolfina Spring, a natural sulphurous water spring encountered along the route.
The elevation gain is approximately 200 metres and the average walking time is around two hours, making it a good choice even for those who only want to dedicate part of the day to trekking.
Before or after the walk, it is also worth stopping in Castelfranco di Sopra, one of the main reference points for the route, and taking some time to enjoy the surrounding landscape.
An itinerary through nature and the villages of the Valdarno
The Balze can easily become one of the stops on a longer stay in the Valdarno.
After the trek, you can continue exploring the small villages of the area or spend another day on Pratomagno, choosing longer and more panoramic routes. The Cammino dei Setteponti also crosses this area, connecting nature, Romanesque parish churches and historic villages along one of the most interesting routes for those who enjoy discovering Tuscany on foot.
There is no need to fit everything into a single day: staying in the Valdarno allows you to alternate different excursions and experience the area at a more relaxed pace.
